01. Beginning with the Everyday

This project began by looking more closely at the ordinary objects, spaces, textures and moments around me. I photographed things that caught my attention, from musical instruments and cups of tea to light fixtures, textures, shadows and familiar spaces, and began considering how these everyday details could communicate something more personal. These photographs became the visual material for three stories about different parts of my identity and experience

02 . Three Personal Stories

Musical Continuum

Music · Growth · Memory

Music has been a constant part of my life, so this piece became a visual reflection of my own musical journey. I brought together photographs of instruments, sheet music, piano keys and meaningful spaces, using continuity, hierarchy, scale, cropping and contrast to communicate growth, memory and progression.

At the centre, a spiralling staircase formed from piano keys - my primary instrument - represents the steady progress that comes through years of practice. The piano is given visual prominence to reflect its foundational role in my identity, while the violin, recorder, ukulele and sheet music appear around it as other parts of that journey. Flowing railings and repeated keyboard structures reinforce a sense of continuity and forward movement, while the contrast between a warm sunset and a dark, rainy sky reflects the different emotions and conditions through which music has remained a constant. I also included the key to my university music room as a small personal anchor - a symbol of creativity, self-expression and finding a familiar musical space within a new environment.

Illuminated Imperfections

This piece explores the beauty that can exist in overlooked, worn and imperfect spaces. I placed a zoomed-in light bulb at the centre of the composition and shifted it into a mystical cyan-blue glow, allowing the light to cut through the dark background and become the main point of focus.Around it, I layered photographs of dusty light fixtures, rust and gritty textures - details that might usually be considered unattractive or undesirable. Rather than hiding them, I reframed and illuminated them as part of the visual story. I used symmetry, hierarchy, colour harmony and continuity to create visual order while directing attention toward the glowing centre. The contrast between the light and the surrounding decay became a reminder that even within imperfection, there can be form, beauty and unexpected elegance if we choose to look more closely.

A Sip of Identi - tea

Tea · Home · Identity

Tea has always been closely tied to my sense of home. Growing up in Sri Lanka, it was part of everyday life. It was something my mother would make for me and it has remained a comforting ritual while studying in Australia. I wanted this collage to capture that connection between tea, memory, identity and belonging.

I used the Gestalt principles of closure and proximity to bring the different elements together as one visual story. A broken, empty cup contrasts with a fuller cup blooming with flowers, representing transformation and the way tea can make me feel grounded, refreshed and restored. Warm yellows, oranges and pinks from tea packaging and chamomile tea create a sense of comfort and familiarity, while scattered tea leaves, scribbled marks and rough textures introduce a little chaos around that calm. I also placed wording from a detox tea box at the centre as a point of emphasis, reflecting the deeper role tea plays for me not simply as a drink, but as something connected to family, routine, culture and home.

03. From Collage to Illustration

I then reinterpreted each of the three photographic collages through digital illustration in Adobe Illustrator.

Rather than simply recreating them, I experimented with shape, colour, abstraction, texture and visual hierarchy to retain the meaning of each original story while developing a new visual language.

Musical Continuum

This illustrated piece develops the ideas from my original collage, transforming them through a more stylised and contemporary visual language. Grounded in a dual-sky background, the composition contrasts a warm, radiant sunset with a cooler, rain-swept atmosphere, reflecting the emotional range and expressive depth that music can hold.

At the centre of the work is a hybrid form that merges the shape of a violin with the lid of a grand piano, bringing together two important musical symbols within one visual structure. Geometric forms inspired by the inner structures of instruments create a sense of rhythm and movement, suggesting how visual composition can echo musical cadence.

The distorted piano keys move away from realism and introduce a more fluid, contemporary design language, while triangular motifs inspired by musical notation add a playful sense of abstraction. Swirling white forms drawn from the decorative details of my ukulele help tie the composition together, creating a cohesive visual thread across the piece.

Rather than simply representing instruments, A Musical Continuum explores the way music moves through memory, mood and time. It becomes a visual reflection of music as something ongoing and deeply personal - a force that connects different parts of my life in one harmonic narrative.

Illuminated Imperfections

In this illustrated rendition of Illuminated Imperfections, I stayed true to the structure of my original collage, preserving the central light bulb motif and the surrounding darkness. These shadowed elements, symbolic of flaws and imperfections, were reinterpreted using layered flare effects, gradients and digital textures to create subtle visual tension.

I explored cool blue tones and hand-drawn, dust-like forms to give the piece a more contemporary digital aesthetic, while maintaining the contrast between glowing light and surrounding imperfection.

At its heart, the work explores the idea that flaws can be illuminating, and that within imperfection there can be a unique kind of beauty and brilliance.

A Sip of Identi - tea

This illustrated piece reimagines my original collage through a warmer, more stylised visual language, while keeping tea as the central symbol of memory, comfort and identity. I used visual hierarchy to draw attention first to the central cup, surrounded by soft cream and brown gradients that evoke the warmth of milk tea.

The surrounding oranges, pinks and yellows were inspired by the colourful tea packaging in my original collage, creating a familiar and comforting atmosphere. I contrasted smooth, blurred backgrounds with rougher textures in the illustrated cup to give the central form more depth and presence. Emerging from the tea is a stylised letter A, referencing the monogrammed cup from the original work and bringing a more personal element into the composition. Chamomile flowers and hand-drawn tea-leaf marks add movement, softness and a sense of spontaneity.

Through this reinterpretation, I wanted to show how something as ordinary as a cup of tea can carry much more than its everyday function. For me, it holds connections to Sri Lanka, family, routine, comfort and home, allowing a simple sip to become a visual expression of memory and identity.

04. Bringing the Stories Home

The final stage brought these separate stories together into one interactive digital publication: A Home Within.

I imagined the experience through spaces within a home, with each room holding a different part of the story.

A space shaped by Musical Continuum - reflecting the role music, instruments, creativity and growth have played throughout my life.

Together, the rooms transformed the three individual artworks into a larger personal narrative about the things we carry with us and the different experiences that can make somewhere feel like home.

05. What I Took From It

This project began with photographing ordinary things around me, but gradually became something much more personal.

Through moving between photography, collage, illustration and interactive publishing, I learned how the same idea can evolve across different visual forms while still holding onto its original meaning.

More importantly, it helped me explore visual communication as a way of telling stories about identity, memory and belonging and how seemingly small things such as an instrument, an old light or a cup of tea can hold much larger stories.
