What Is Education For? - A Personal Philosophy of Education

Educational philosophy · Early undergraduate writing

This paper represents one of my earliest explorations of my own philosophy of education. Drawing on Dewey, Freire, Noddings and Shor, I explore education as a relational, democratic and transformative process, with particular attention to curiosity, care, student agency and learning beyond academic performance.

Looking back, many of the ideas I first explored here, particularly meaningful learning, human connection and student voice have continued to shape my teaching and learning design practice.

From Grades to Growth: Rethinking Education

Reflective academic inquiry · Educational philosophy, pedagogy & learning design · 2025

Through a four-part reflective series, I explored how my understanding of education shifted from competition, standardisation and rote learning towards a more relational, inclusive and learner-centred view. Drawing on educational philosophy, critical pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning and design thinking, I considered how pedagogy, curriculum and assessment might work together to support meaningful learning.

As part of this exploration, I developed my own “Mind in Motion” Learning Cycle, bringing together divergent thinking, dialogue and knowledge-building, focused thinking, and reflection for growth.

Education, Power & Equity

Race, class and critical pedagogy through history

In this paper, I examine how education has historically operated as both a site of inequality and a possibility for social transformation. I explore how colonialism, race, class, standardisation and neoliberalism have shaped schooling, while considering how critical, democratic and decolonising approaches might help reimagine education more equitably.

Themes: Educational history · Equity · Race & class · Critical pedagogy · Decolonising education
