Melodies of growth!

Updated: Aug 27

I had the honour of being invited as the guest speaker for the Music Day event hosted by my school, Ladies' College. It was so lovely to engage with students from Ladies' College and a few other schools.

For my speech, I decided to talk about how music has profoundly impacted my personal growth and character development in many different ways.

All the students participated enthusiastically in the discussions and live music-making activities! They gave smart and insightful answers to the questions I asked them. They really thought about the diverse benefits of music, balancing serious theoretical understanding with the joy of practical application.

Watching the students sing in harmony, having fun, and demonstrating their love for music was incredibly rewarding. The whole ambiance was just perfect, filled with the love and joy of music-making! It made my day, when students told me how inspired they felt after my speech!❤

Key highlights of what I talked about included:

Organization:

I explained how juggling 3 instruments, studies and other extra-curricular activities taught me time management and organizational skills.

Focus and critical thinking:

I drew on the parallels between detailed music practices and academic focus. I also did a live demonstration of how I analyse a music score and practice.

Self-Confidence:

I highlighted the benefits of music performance and how it has improved my ability to perform and speak in front of an audience. I also touched on conveying emotions and musical ideas effectively to an audience.

Cultural Appreciation:

I demonstrated a mash-up of Tamil, Sinhala and English songs to showcase diverse musical cultures. The students had fun singing this live too!

Teamwork and Leadership:

I shared my personal experiences of being a part of and leading music ensembles like choirs and orchestras that developed my teamwork and leadership skills. It was fun teaching the students a 5 part harmony to a song to further explain the importance of listening to each other and blending in.

Opportunities:

I discussed various opportunities that opened up including inclusive music advocacy projects with my talented friend Angela Bettoni, my capstone project and more.
